We are learning to weld, practicing under the expert tutelage available at American Steel Studios. We are learning about plants, pollinators, and gardening from the green house and nursery teams, about living walls and urban green spaces, about pollinators and their struggles and importance in cities, about storm drain issues, runoff, water ways and catch water systems, about solar power and its strengths and weaknesses and best use in our setting. Join us for two-part artist talk with current exhibiting artist, Warith Taha in connection to his exhibition "Musical Chairs" and curator, artist and educator Ray Beldner about his experience working with recent San Jose State MFA graduates to curate "Minted". On Art and Gentrification with Warith Taha With the buzz generated over the last few years in relation to Oakland becoming an artist’s mecca, the question of the role of art in the process of gentrification has been raised with increasing frequency. Warith Taha is a mixed-media visual artist who believes strongly in art’s power to foster understanding, build community and create change. An Oakland native, Warith has had the opportunity to work both here in the Bay Area and abroad to bring art to populations of traditionally under-served youth. Warith has served as a Teaching Artist to a number of local arts organizations such as ProArts, The Imagine Bus Project, MOCHA and most recently became the Art Education Specialist to the Crissy Field Center in San Francisco. Warith graduated from Boston College in 2009, with degrees in Sociology and Studio Art. After graduating, Warith relocated to Beijing, China where he worked with the children of migrant workers, facilitating curriculum focused on art, social justice and English as a second language. Warith’s art often explores themes of identity, history, and otherness. Congratulation, you have an Art degree - now what? with Ray Beldner Curator and artists from San Jose State MFA Exhibition discuss the work on view at Pro Arts and muse over the future of young artists and their professional careers post graduation. Born in San Francisco, Ray Beldner received a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from Mills College. He has received numerous awards and fellowships including a California Arts Council Fellowship in New Genres, a Creative Work Fund Grant from the Haas Foundations, and a Potrero Nuevo environmental art grant. He has taught sculpture, interdisciplinary studies, and Professional Practices at the San Francisco Art Institute, California College of the Arts, San Francisco State University, and University of California, Santa Cruz.

We are a growing group of inspired individuals encompassing a wide variety of skill sets, with a common vision for community engagement and neighborhood beautification.   We are artists, landscape designers, water conservationists, habitat architects and enthusiastic program developers and fundraisers. We are making our communities better using reclaimed materials, recycling, and doing educational outreach. Every Tuesday night we come together to learn and progress in new skill sets in an incredible skills share. About community building, and the power of groups to creatively address issues of dumping, graffiti, air and soil quality, and the power that each of us has to contribute to change. Most of all, this night is FUN! We get to play, laugh, share and grow together. This rapidly growing team has won our hearts, and we welcome you to come join! There are a million ways to be involved, dates and times are flexible, but Tuesday’s are when we come together and get to play.

With the buzz generated over the last few years in relation to Oakland becoming an artist’s mecca, the question of the role of art in the process of gentrification has been raised with increasing frequency.

Songs for Women Living with War / Bahay ni Lola / House of the Grandmothers is a “living memorial” and anti-war monument that remembers women and children and the violence they suffer. This prototype public monument project was conceived by artist Johanna Poethig and inspired by writer Evelina Galang’s work with the WWII Comfort Women from the Philippines, the “Lolas” (grandmothers). Songs for Women Living with War is a house of many stories, a place to contemplate the effects of war on women and children. There are many war monuments but few for women. This is a memorial of transcendence, empowerment, and healing. It seeks to create a platform of understanding that these crimes against humanity do not begin and end on the battlefield. Sexual violence against women knows no time or place or nationality-it is a phenomenon endemic to our culture of war, patriarchy, and violence. Saturday, November 12, 2016 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm | Pro Arts Gallery The Songs for Women Living with War “bahay” is an “open house” structure that provides a platform for information and performances that become part of the installation as “songs” both embedded in the art work and as live presentations, drawing from global and local contexts. During the first stages of the design and fabrication of this monument the consequence of poverty, conflict and sexual violence and how to organize against it was informed by artist Claudia Bernardi, founder of Walls of Hope; Lila Shahani, an Assistant Secretary of the Philippine Government on Poverty and Sex Trafficking; and feminist activists including Dr. Kathryn Poethig from CSU, Monterey Bay’s Global Studies program, Gwyn Kirk of Women for Genuine Security, Deborah Pembrook of the National Survivor Network Speakers Bureau, and writer Evelina Galang. Composer Theresa Wong led community vocal improvisations in the song form of “Lamentations”. Artists, scholars and activists will be invited to contribute their “songs” as presentations and performances during the exhibit at Pro Arts Gallery in October and November 2016. Songs for Women Living with War project is created in conjunction with the Visual and Public Art program at CSU, Monterey Bay. *This program is made possible in part with funds by the City of Oakland Cultural Funding Program, the Clorox Company Foundation, the W & F Hewlett Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, and the Zellerbach Family Foundation.

We open our shop space, for visitors to come and share their project plans, collaborate, and use our facilities as a resource for skill-building. The DSC is located in Bay 4 of American Steel.
Tuesday, November 1, 2016 from 7-9pm
7-9pm
We are a growing group of inspired individuals encompassing a wide variety of skill sets, with a common vision for community engagement and neighborhood beautification.   We are artists, landscape designers, water conservationists, habitat architects and enthusiastic program developers and fundraisers. We are making our communities better using reclaimed materials, recycling, and doing educational outreach. Every Tuesday night we come together to learn and progress in new skill sets in an incredible skills share.
